hi there it's me Dave from motels and
0:02
I'm here to talk about the 1953 Plymouth
0:06
the Revolutionary new car that is the
0:08
first Motorcar with a truly balanced
0:11
ride so that you can have a ride so
0:13
smooth you can read a book at 60 MPH
0:17
imagine that well for 1953 that probably
0:20
was a big deal cars then you know you
0:23
still had steel wheels you had
0:25
relatively primitive suspensions and you
0:27
could tune for either ride or for
0:30
handling but it was hard to get both so
0:33
we have this dealership uh item this
0:37
would have been hanging in a dealership
0:38
window or an inside and as you can see
0:42
this would have been a lovely purple
0:44
color with the gold it would have looked
0:46
quite snazzy and you can see a
0:49
gyroscope and so the flag is kind of a
0:51
mystery to me I have to be honest this
0:53
ad campaign just uh fell off the charts
0:56
it might have been only for
0:58
dealerships uh 1953 that would have been
1:01
plymouth's 25th anniversary not for the
1:05
cars but for the name Plymouth which
1:07
came uh as many know that came from a
1:10
brand of twine that was trusted by
1:12
Farmers not from Plymouth Rock although
1:15
they certainly did make use of that
1:17
reference and amusingly its car the car
1:19
that it actually sold as the Plymouth
1:22
had been the Chrysler for just a year
1:24
ago and before that it was the Maxwell
1:27
so this is basically what was the really
1:30
rubbish Maxwell that caught Maxwell into
1:32
a lot of trouble and then Zer Skelton
1:35
and Breer turned it into the good
1:37
Maxwell and then it got turned into a
1:39
Chrysler for a couple years and then it
1:41
turned into the Plymouth by now of
1:44
course all vestiges of that car were
1:46
gone it was 25 years later and the only
1:49
reason that they didn't celebrate their
1:50
anniversary is because it was the 50th
1:53
year for Buick and for Ford and they
1:55
would have looked pretty silly so now we
1:58
look at the actual car and the car
2:00
doesn't make a big splash like this sign
2:02
indicates because Chrysler was expecting
2:04
that the Korean War would heat up and
2:07
they were conserving on Chrome and
2:09
copper and brass and all that that might
2:11
be needed for the war effort so they put
2:13
almost no Chrome onto the car so it
2:16
looks pretty plain so let's talk about
2:19
this incredibly balanced smooth ride
2:22
it's kind of funny because what they
2:24
actually did was they moved the rear
2:26
axle forward by 4 and A2 in creating a
2:29
lot of rear overhang that hadn't been
2:31
there the car's length as a whole only
2:33
got 1 in smaller and the interior got
2:36
bigger so it's hard to know what they
2:38
meant exactly by a balanced ride unless
2:40
the front and rear overhangs now matched
2:43
but normally if you have the wheels as
2:45
far out to the corners as you can get
2:47
you get better ride and
2:48
handling uh it's possible though that
2:51
this was ameliorated by the new front
2:53
and rear suspensions so for the front
2:55
suspension they used new control arm
2:57
design that was better than the old one
3:00
and resisted swaying you know when you
3:02
uh T tilting body roll it resisted body
3:06
roll which is the tilting when you make
3:08
a turn too hard and the car leans over
3:11
if it's an older car generally speaking
3:14
modern cars are much better at not doing
3:17
that they also had a front sway bar
3:19
standard which you know some years that
3:22
you had a standard anti-sway bar some
3:24
years you didn't so a front anti- Wave
3:26
Bar in 1953 was a pretty big deal and
3:30
they also used spay mounted rear springs
3:32
with five leaves and they did all sorts
3:34
of things to try to keep the car more
3:36
stable and to improve the ride with the
3:39
positioning and design of that rear axle
3:41
setup even though it was just leaf
3:43
spring with five leaves they really did
3:46
a lot of work to make it as good as they
3:48
could so you know that for 1953 Chevy
3:51
and Ford already had V8s Plymouth of
3:54
course did not and what they had instead
3:57
was a choice of three-speed manual
4:00
transmission or three-speed with one
4:03
overdrive manual transmission that was
4:06
optional and the same old by now kind of
4:10
obsolete straight six in so it was a
4:13
good sturdy design it wasn't as powerful
4:15
as it could have been there was a lot
4:17
that they could have done to make it
4:18
more powerful but their view the view of
4:20
the executives at the time was people
4:22
don't really care about power half the
4:24
cars sold in America at that point were
4:26
straight sixes and their sales were
4:28
pretty good Chevrolet made twice as many
4:31
cars as Plymouth in
4:34
1953 so you know that there was some
4:37
room to move up still the 53 Plymouth
4:40
for whatever reason maybe it's because
4:42
they had such neat purple and gold
4:45
posters uh sorry flags for the
4:47
dealerships and these pictures of
4:50
gyroscopes and the ride so smooth you
4:53
can read a book at 60 M hour uh maybe
4:56
that will help them to beat their pass
4:59
record record by 20,000 cars for the
5:01
year again still nothing really compared
5:05
with Chevrolet volume and not even
5:08
particularly close to Ford volume which
5:10
was quite high but quite good for
5:13
Plymouth and maybe if they had put more
5:16
money into being able to produce more
5:18
plymouths back in 1946 Plymouth would be
5:22
Chevrolet's equal by now but they didn't
5:25
and it wasn't so one of the interesting
5:27
things about the 53 Plymouth is that was
5:30
the last year made with no head of
5:32
styling at the company uh in a lot of
5:34
ways you can tell it's not the most
5:36
perfectly styled car ever made by
5:38
Chrysler or anybody else the 52s were
5:42
worse they looked even stubbier they had
5:44
removable fenders in the 52s and
5:46
Plymouth finally dropped that and had
5:48
welded on fenders like everybody else in
5:50
the 53s so they looked a bit nicer in
5:54
the meantime I hope that you've had a
5:55
good time looking back at the 53
5:58
plymouths they were probably the highest
6:01
utility car that you could get at the
6:02
time they were very reliable they had a
6:06
good ride in handling they had good
6:09
brakes they had good parts and they were
6:12
relatively big on the inside while being
6:14
relatively small on the outside but it
6:16
was a time when people did not care they
6:18
wanted conspicuous consumption they
6:20
wanted to show off and they wanted to
6:22
have a lot of fun after the Pras and the
6:26
sacrifices of World War II so
6:30
it uh could have sold better if it was a
6:33
less functional car which is
6:37
ironic and with that I will see you with
6:39
the next video
