hi there it's me Dave again and I'm here
0:01
to talk about the
0:03
1924-25 Chrysler now this was a car that
0:08
was first built in late
0:11
1923 it was first put on sale and shown
0:14
to the public in January 1924 so you'd
0:17
think that it was the 100th anniversary
0:20
of Chrysler but Chrysler itself says
0:23
you're wrong so let's talk about the car
0:27
for a bit very briefly uh some model B70
0:30
it's the model B because he had actually
0:32
designed a Chrysler earlier that was
0:34
going to be made by Willis in New Jersey
0:37
in Elizabeth and that didn't come to
0:39
fruition for various dull reasons so uh
0:43
it ended up being made by Maxwell that
0:46
was the model B 70 because 70 mower was
0:50
its top speed and if you don't know cars
0:52
of the early 20s then you won't be at
0:54
all impressed but believe me it was
0:56
impressive to get that fast uh you
0:59
really had to have have something like a
1:01
Packard Super Eight at that point a
1:03
Dodge Brothers car you know the
1:05
theoretical top speed would be like 35 M
1:08
an hour good luck getting there the
1:10
gracer it wasn't just that they claimed
1:13
it had a 70 mph top speed it really did
1:16
you could buy one off the line and see
1:18
how much faster than 70 and uh it cost
1:22
just $11.95
1:25
$1,195 and of course that means nothing
1:27
without context it was actually a lot
1:29
lot of money at the
1:31
time uh the cheapest cars you could get
1:34
were about half that price uh the B70
1:37
came with 68 brake horsepower that's
1:40
almost double the Dodge Brothers
1:43
car so now these weren't luxury cars I
1:46
mean you can find them at shows now and
1:48
then but on the inside you can see that
1:50
it was uh very similar to a mainstream
1:53
car it was a little bit above but not
1:55
much above it was a midline car and it
1:57
was always meant to be
2:00
now the one thing is that very few
2:02
luxury cars could match what it had
2:04
Under the Skin we can start with
2:06
four-wheel hydraulic brakes very rare at
2:09
the time most cars in a low price range
2:11
or mid-price range had two wheel
2:14
mechanical brakes the ones that had
2:16
four-wheel mechanical brakes were a
2:18
little less common four-wheel hydraulic
2:21
brakes extremely rare and the braking
2:23
system on those probably didn't last
2:26
very long or work in all conditions
2:28
because Chrysler and Engineers under
2:30
Carl Breer they took the Lockheed system
2:33
that was used by other cars such as the
2:35
cord and perfected it which meant
2:37
replacing every single part of it well
2:40
they had an air filter most cars then
2:42
did not have air filter as hard as it is
2:44
to believe now they had a replaceable
2:47
element oil filter which worked off of a
2:50
shunt system they didn't actually invent
2:53
it but they made it work they had a
2:56
temperature gauge and that was really a
2:58
new thing uh most companies would would
3:00
give you a decorative uh radiator cap
3:03
and people would replace that with
3:04
something called a moto meter which uh
3:07
put in a thermostat on top of your
3:09
radiator so that you could see it from
3:12
uh the driver's seat Chrysler actually
3:14
put a gauge into the dashboard so the
3:17
new Chrysler was designed by mostly by
3:20
three guys named zader Skelton and Breer
3:23
came awfully close to being called the
3:25
zeter and being produced without Walter
3:27
Chrysler but that's a story for another
3:29
day they were surprisingly reliable cars
3:32
despite the high performance which was
3:34
really a credit to Zer skeleton and
3:36
Breer and uh it was pretty impressive
3:40
how they tried to protect it and make it
3:43
reliable and make it work every day and
3:46
the body was still wrapped over wood
3:48
which was typical of everybody but Dodge
3:50
Brothers at the time because Dodge
3:52
Brothers had just worked with Bud on
3:54
making the first old steel
3:57
body now Carl Carl bre remembered and
4:00
here I've got a quote that I'm going to
4:01
read people lik them because they could
4:03
drive as fast as they dared yet the car
4:05
would stay right with them and seem to
4:07
ask for more this was something most
4:10
cars of the time would not do and that's
4:13
certainly true um now in 1925 they added
4:17
rubber engine mounts to uh reduce engine
4:19
vibration it was a straight six it
4:21
wasn't that bad to begin with uh and
4:24
they added adjustable front seats and
4:26
this made the car even more popular CHR
4:29
were in fact grew by Leaps and Bounds
4:32
every year it was really pretty
4:33
impressive until the depression and they
4:36
ended up buying Dodge Brothers as most
4:38
people know so again Chrysler is not
4:41
celebrating its 100th birthday this year
4:43
but they sure could and they'd have
4:45
something really good to celebrate their
4:48
first car was a doozy well it wasn't a
4:50
doozy because it didn't cost so much in
4:52
a doozy as a dusenberg but you get the
4:54
idea anyway this is Dave signing out uh
4:57
with a request that you visit our
4:59
