Hi, this is Dave from Motel and I'm here
0:02
to talk to you a little bit about what
0:04
Chrysler needs to do. Sorry, Stalantis
0:06
or FCAUS in particular needs to do about
0:10
their factories. And the problem is that
0:13
we are facing a lot of import taxes or
0:16
tariffs as they're commonly known. Now,
0:18
the problem is for automakers is that
0:20
first of all, parts cross the borders
0:23
quite a lot since we had the North
0:25
American Free Trade Agreement. However,
0:27
that's going away midyear 2026. So,
0:30
let's assume for a moment that all these
0:33
tariffs are going to be permanent. What
0:35
that does is that returns us to the days
0:37
of before the 1960s
0:40
where basically that's how we did
0:42
things. Each country had its own
0:44
factories. So, what are we looking at
0:46
with the former Chrysler in terms of if
0:49
we make it one set of factories for the
0:51
US and one for elsewhere? Well, first of
0:54
all, I would expect that Sterling
0:56
Heights and Warren would start making
0:58
heavy duty pickups, which would move up
1:00
from Saltio, Mexico. The ProMaster
1:03
probably isn't made in large enough
1:05
quantities to bother moving it up, and
1:07
they might keep making them, and they
1:09
might decide that they don't really need
1:10
to be doing commercial bands in the
1:12
United States anymore. But regardless, I
1:15
would expect the Ram 2500 and 3500 to
1:18
move up to the US. They make I I would
1:20
say about 40% of Rams Ram pickups are
1:24
the Ram 2500 and 3500. So they'll need a
1:28
lot of space to make those. They might
1:30
just devote Warren truck to making the
1:33
heavy duty Rams and move the wagon ear
1:35
over to join the Ram 1500 it's based on
1:38
in Sterling Heights. I figured that the
1:40
chassis cabs will probably go away. The
1:42
Ram 3500, 45, and 5500. They haven't
1:45
really been updated in years and years.
1:47
So, I don't think that anybody the
1:49
company really expects to keep making
1:51
them. Now, as for the engines, they can
1:53
either shift the hurricane engines into
1:55
the US. Trenton has plenty of space.
1:57
Dundee probably has plenty of space.
1:59
Cooko could make space. Uh, the Hemi V8
2:02
is already going to be made starting in
2:04
August in Dundee. And that would be all
2:06
the engines made here. And for trucks
2:09
sold in Canada and Mexico, the plant in
2:12
Mexico can keep on making the
2:13
Hurricanes, and they probably wouldn't
2:15
have a V8 option after a while. or they
2:17
would price it with that tariff in mind.
2:19
Uh to uh Saltio wouldn't shut down
2:21
entirely. Saltio would be supplying
2:24
Mexico and Canada. It's a much smaller
2:26
market. So there'd be a lot of jobs
2:28
lost. Belvier, I think, will end up with
2:31
Stella medium. That's the mediumsiz
2:34
front-wheel drive base cars that were
2:36
designed uh the basis is designed uh in
2:40
Europe from uh Fujo. And that was
2:44
supposed to be the next generation Jeep
2:45
Compass here, but they've paused all
2:47
work on the Compass. Probably trying to
2:49
figure out whether they can still make
2:51
them in Bmpton. I'm pretty sure that
2:53
they're going to decide that they have
2:54
to make them in the United States. And
2:56
I'm pretty sure if they do, it will be
2:58
in Belvadier. And they'll set it up so
3:00
that they'll have a Chrysler, Dodge, and
3:02
a Jeep all coming off the same basic
3:05
Stella medium platform using either the
3:08
Pujo 1.6 six liter engines being
3:10
produced in Dundee andor the 2 L uh
3:15
Hurricane 4-cylinders that are coming up
3:17
also to be made in Dundee. Now, the
3:19
midsize pickup that they're working on,
3:21
I suspect is going to be compatible with
3:24
one of their Toledo plants where they
3:26
make the Gladiator. So, I figure that
3:28
that'll actually just slip over there
3:30
into Toledo, leaving Belvadier free
3:33
because having the entire Belvadier
3:35
plant to make a midsize pickup is kind
3:38
of a gamble. And right now they don't
3:39
have the money for gambling because they
3:41
lost over $2.5 billion dollar in the
3:45
first half of 2025. And a lot of that is
3:48
because US sales just plummeted for
3:51
Stallantis while everybody else had a
3:53
boom. So they've got to cut prices and
3:56
they have lower volume and they're going
3:57
to lose money. One of the big question
3:59
is whether they're willing to invest all
4:01
these billions of dollars I'm talking
4:03
about in repurposing factories and
4:05
moving things around. I'm assuming that
4:07
they will. Stella Large, that is most of
4:10
the company's vehicle name plates right
4:13
now. That would include next generation
4:15
Grand Cherokee. Uh presumably next
4:18
generation Durango if there is one. That
4:20
includes the Charger, both gasoline and
4:23
electric. That includes the Recon. That
4:25
includes a charger. And that would
4:27
include, according to past plans, the
4:29
minivan. Now, I think that what will
4:31
happen is that those will all end up
4:33
being built in the Detroit complex for
4:35
the United States. That's two factories,
4:38
the old Jefferson Avenue and the two old
4:40
Mac Avenue engine plants joined together
4:42
into one great big new plant. I think
4:44
that that's plenty of capacity and it's
4:46
flexible enough to make all these
4:48
different vehicles there. And I suspect
4:50
that Windsor or Tuluca, probably not
4:53
both, will make all the Stella large
4:56
platform vehicles for both Canada and
4:59
Mexico. And it's not that much sales in
5:01
those two countries combined that they
5:03
would need more than one factory. Uh,
5:06
I'm hoping, you know, both of the
5:08
factories have a lot of good to say
5:10
about them. Windsor, in particular, has
5:12
often been Chrysler's best factory, and
5:16
it's been there since before there was a
5:19
Chrysler Corporation. So, I'm rooting
5:21
for Windsor, but TUCA has a lot to
5:23
recommend it to. I think that that's the
5:25
main amount of changes. The Hornet will
5:28
probably just disappear. It's not really
5:30
economic to make it here. They've
5:32
already said they're not going to bring
5:33
any over in 2026 because of the tariffs
5:36
being way too high for them to make any
5:38
money off it. The Pacifica, they might
5:41
actually end up just dropping at some
5:42
point. Uh, it sales so far this year
5:44
have been abysmally bad. The Kia
5:47
Carnival has been unexpectedly high
5:49
competition, which is the first time
5:52
that Kia's ever seriously challenged
5:54
Chrysler for minivans. But I think that
5:56
the company by not doing a new minivan
5:59
in so many years has really given up.
6:01
And whether they continue Chrysler with
6:04
the medium or not, I don't know what
6:06
they plan. And that's it. We'll all see
6:09
together what happens. In the meantime,
6:11
I keep track of the rumors and the news
6:14
at motel.com.
6:16
