Ed created tailfins.com in the mid-1990s; the site was last seen around 1999, until now! when it made a return as a “museum piece.” Here are some stories about the site, car sites then and now, the Internet Slant Six Club, Internet Mopar V8 Club, Internet FWD Club, and the “My Slant on Things” book... and just a bit about the classic versions of Allpar. #slant #slantsix #tailfins #mopar #classiccars #dodge #plymouth #allpar

let me just ask you are you okay being
0:05
recorded sure you might want to ask the
0:08
viewers if it's okay that they have to
0:09
stare at me you
0:11
know it so let's talk about talins where
0:14
it came from how you put it up long long
0:16
long time ago uh I used to run the
0:19
marketing department for the Bush
0:20
Gardens theme park in Williamsburg
0:22
Virginia we formed a partnership with a
0:25
thing called the blackburg electronic
0:28
Village in blackburg Virginia
0:30
and that was a partnership between uh
0:32
Virginia Tech maybe Bell Atlantic uh and
0:36
the City of
0:37
blackburg and this was early 90s and
0:41
they wired the whole town with fiber
0:44
optic cable just to see what would
0:47
happen and um you know they had like a
0:50
little shop in town that sold games uh
0:55
and all of a sudden they're getting
0:56
orders from all over the world I mean
0:58
it's just like a lot of really cool
0:59
things
1:00
happen um I got uh Bush entertainment to
1:04
come up with some money to help them
1:05
wire the
1:06
schools and an exchange for that me my
1:10
staff whoever uh they had us come up and
1:14
take HTML lessons and you know learn how
1:18
the internet worked and sit through
1:20
seminars and all that which was pretty
1:23
cool and I got it in my head working
1:26
with one of the guys up there that we
1:27
were going to get in early on this thing
1:29
and get
1:30
Rich um and we came up with the idea
1:33
that we'd come up with the analog of a
1:35
Car Club online charge for membership
1:39
and then you know watch the money come
1:41
rolling down out of the sky I already
1:44
had all the Slant six stuff so the first
1:46
iteration of it was uh a slant six
1:50
section and what I learned eventually
1:53
was a I was hardly making any money at
1:57
all B it was so incredible labor
2:00
intensive because it was all handc back
2:02
in those days you know it wasn't like I
2:04
could just drop something into a form
2:06
and boom it was on the site every page
2:10
had to be uh done by hand nobody had a
2:13
scanner back then so people would mail
2:15
me pictures I'd scan them and anyway
2:18
long story short whole lot of work not a
2:21
lot of money um and then it was one of
2:24
those life happens things I had a
2:27
marriage that hit the Rocks um there was
2:30
no way I could deal with all those
2:31
changes and the site I ended up
2:34
literally giving the site away another
2:38
guy uh I forget what he called he made
2:41
it the no BS slant 6 site took down
2:44
everything I had done put up two or
2:46
three pages let it stagnate and then it
2:49
died so in a nutshell that's that's
2:52
where Tail Fins came from and whatever
2:54
and no I'm not rich so that's why it's
2:57
at ts. motels.com well the uh the the
3:00
the other one I had that was going to
3:03
get us rich uh was data diner.com and it
3:07
was going to be a publishing site and
3:10
looking back it was like a half-ass
3:12
attempt at being Amazon before there was
3:14
an Amazon I still own that one if you'd
3:17
like to buy it I I'll take
3:19
offers excuse me we were selling car
3:22
parts um a lot of which Gary was doing I
3:27
mean there was no e-commerce back then
3:28
you basically
3:30
put it up somebody would say they want
3:32
to buy it you had trust them to mail a
3:33
check and you know again everything was
3:36
analog and and hand done by hand well
3:40
Gary being Gary felt bad about charging
3:44
them shipping so he was shipping all
3:46
this stuff for free out of his pocket
3:48
and was losing money on it so that
3:50
didn't work
3:52
either so this would have started around
3:55
96
3:56
97 uh that's what the copyright dat is
4:00
on Tail Fins I think it was earlier than
4:03
that you know I was I was doing the the
4:07
stuff with blackburg 92
4:11
93 I'm gonna get3 or
4:14
94 uh the first iteration probably went
4:18
up but I could be wrong I don't remember
4:20
he could probably go to the way back
4:23
machine on archive.org and look for the
4:25
earliest instance and it would be there
4:28
what is what is the best part of tail
4:30
fins for me to look at today in
4:33
2024 um my favorite was uh the the bench
4:38
race page where people would uh write
4:41
stories that weren't howt just you know
4:44
their favorite car recollection kind of
4:46
stuff there's there's a wonderful one
4:48
that Doug Dutra wrote about doing
4:50
illegal burnouts and uh how he was
4:53
trying to push the tail end of a car
4:56
around while it was doing Bernards to
4:58
sign his name on the pavement I mean you
5:01
know just wonderfully goofy things like
5:03
that um there was the guy that did the
5:06
slant 6 wedding there was the other guy
5:08
who uh ran for uh I forget it was a city
5:12
council position or something and he
5:14
made his uh Dodge Dart into the campaign
5:17
mobile you know uh I I just loved all
5:20
those stories we actually did a contest
5:22
or two on who could write the best story
5:24
for that part of the site and um you
5:28
know that that was pretty cool
5:30
uh the other thing just because it was a
5:32
trip down memory lane is the uh are the
5:35
ones that involve Gary or the ones I
5:38
wrote In fact I sent you an email I
5:40
think there was a uh an article I found
5:43
that I'd completely forgotten about most
5:45
of it about when um I went and redid a
5:49
lot of the things I had done wrong on my
5:51
64 Valiant and I had forgotten about all
5:55
the fabrication work and welding and
5:57
homemade exhaust system and all the
5:59
other stuff I did on the car you know I
6:02
really enjoyed going through that it was
6:03
like wow I actually did a lot of work
6:05
back then you
6:07
know and I hope the car's still around
6:09
and I hope someone's enjoying it all you
6:12
know today of course we have forums and
6:14
the first forums were just starting to
6:16
get coded like web BBS which was such a
6:19
wonderful form and that it had no
6:21
security in it whatsoever yeah you know
6:24
there was just no thought of gee if
6:27
somebody comes up here and spams or
6:29
there's not much you can do yeah in BBS
6:33
because just you it assumed everybody
6:35
was a good person and you're all in a
6:37
community I I think one of the mistakes
6:39
I made with tail fans was I just assumed
6:42
no one could write with me so everything
6:45
would come into me and I'd massage it
6:48
and tweak it and whatever before it went
6:50
up um you know which I guess was fine on
6:54
one one end but on the
6:57
other the the amount of work it took to
7:00
get all that done uh was a bit much and
7:03
most people weren't online back then you
7:05
know
7:06
I uh or or you know just weren't that
7:09
sophisticated with anything electronic a
7:12
lot of that stuff was a handwritten
7:14
letter that I got in the mail with some
7:16
photograph stuff then so a lot of vpar
7:20
was people's emails especially in the
7:21
early days and yeah once we had the
7:24
Forum you know I'd see something cool in
7:26
the Forum and I'd write to the person
7:28
and say mind if I make this permanent
7:30
and then there'd be a page up so you
7:32
know we had a lot of mistakes and a lot
7:34
of uh what's the word you know the
7:36
stories that are great and sound really
7:39
good but aren't true 426 Hemi same
7:41
rating net and
7:43
gross well and of course it wasn't it
7:46
was 370 or so no matter what you've got
7:48
parasitic loss along the way and there's
7:51
no way that would be true but then again
7:54
yeah I mean it was I mean Chevy
7:56
dominated drag racing because they lied
7:57
about their horsepower ratings
8:00
underestimated and Ford went the other
8:03
way and overstated what the actual
8:06
horsepower was because he thought it was
8:07
good for sales and uh when they defined
8:11
the brackets and everything through the
8:13
NH Chevys just killed everybody else
8:16
because their 190 horsepower motor was
8:19
really making
8:24
235 was it Stan Aon or Doug Dutra I
8:27
think it was Aton uh bill to 170 for
8:30
drag racing because the thing will rev
8:32
like crazy it's uh it's got a short
8:35
stroke and you know that's bigger than
8:37
the boore and the 225 is the other way
8:39
around uh and uh I guess set up right
8:43
that little 170 will scream you can grab
8:45
it to the moon and it's fine with it all
8:48
right so T fins is back uh you've been
8:52
through bement and it's a minor miracle
8:55
it's back because I don't know how many
8:58
hard dve drive crashes backup Drive
9:01
losses everything I've had along the way
9:04
I have no idea how those files
9:08
survived I can't believe I can go and
9:11
look at that old site
9:12
again I remember when uh when I first
9:15
put uh Tail Fins Up um Jack po the guy
9:20
that that did uh the slance 6 News he
9:25
was not happy with it at all he goes I
9:29
don't know what this new thing is but I
9:30
don't like it it's G to undermine the
9:32
club
9:34
and so I I gave him free access to the
9:37
site there's a section in there where
9:39
you can uh sign up for the the Slant six
9:42
of America Club you can order back
9:44
issues with the
9:46
newsletter I created all that and gave
9:48
it to to jack for free as a peace
9:51
offering uh because he was he was not
9:54
pleased at all that we were you know
9:56
encroaching in his Slant six space
10:00
now that makes sense I mean it's a
10:02
relatively small space Oh yeah yeah yeah
10:06
and I I remember he was always jealous
10:08
of the studa baker Club I guess there
10:09
were so many of them that that club
10:12
actually made a fair amount of money and
10:15
he had a real hard time squeezing any
10:17
cash out of us cheap skate Slant six
10:21
owners well that's it isn't it it's a
10:23
slightly different group of people it's
10:25
oh yeah yeah I me Por four cylinder Club
10:29
yeah wellow that that's that's that's
10:31
like uh Gary platz's classic t-shirt
10:34
that said Slant six cheap with an
10:41
attitude let's let's give another nod to
10:43
Gary um you know one of the the fun
10:46
things about all the stuff we did uh the
10:50
car shows he put on and the all the
10:52
craziness that we used to pipe up to
10:54
jack for the newsletter I mean he he
10:57
would get back to us going I you know
10:59
guys you know can you be a little more
11:01
serious and because we just would have
11:04
as much fun as we could and Gary would
11:06
do his goofy illustrations and whatnot
11:07
and he was so desperate for content for
11:10
the newsletter that he would publish it
11:12
anyway you know um and and giving Gary a
11:15
creat creative Outlet was just so much
11:18
fun um you go on the old tailin site
11:21
there's a page with all the t-shirts
11:22
that he did back then um there was a ton
11:27
of his artwork all through the thing
11:30
um there was the uh Platz cheesy Arts
11:34
page where you could buy the the air
11:36
cleaner clocks and other stuff he would
11:39
come up with uh it was like dealing with
11:42
a cheap skate uh Big Daddy at Roth
11:46
almost you know I mean he was always
11:48
coming up with One Lunatic thing or
11:50
another and it was just so much fun to
11:54
work with him and to give him an outlet
11:56
on those things um which I guess is
11:59
another favorite part of the site for me
12:01
you know the Gary Platz touch and of
12:03
course he has the book now oh yeah it's
12:05
by Gary and dead yeah yeah all stitched
12:08
together by
12:09
you m went on things there you go you
12:13
did you did um which is much better than
12:16
the half-ass way we attempted to do it
12:18
so thank you so much I don't think uh
12:21
anybody involved especially me
12:23
understood venture capital and scaling
12:26
and I still had it in my head that I
12:27
could just do this out of my basement
12:30
and bootstrap it up all by myself and uh
12:33
I don't know looking back now at things
12:35
like Amazon and Facebook and whatever it
12:38
just ain't the way it works you know we
12:40
uh we had a fun run with it but uh and
12:44
it's an artifact now I mean it's it's I
12:46
think it's representative of an era
12:49
that's come and gone when it comes to to
12:51
things online and not everyone was on
12:54
and if they were on America Online it
12:56
was wal Garden back then you couldn't
12:58
leave America online to actually go on
13:01
the internet yeah it was a whole
13:03
different world back
13:07
then now if you go on the member
13:11
Pages uh there were a lot more than that
13:13
and if anybody had a
13:15
picture with their car description that
13:17
was a paid
13:19
membership so so that that was a few
13:22
people yeah yeah and again i' I'd have
13:26
to go back and look and add it up I
13:27
can't remember but but there were there
13:30
were respectable few and then we we
13:32
tried I tried to expand the site it was
13:35
slant 6 oh and then added I added V8
13:39
Mopars and front-wheel drive Mopars and
13:42
then the idea was to evolve it out to
13:44
where encompassed everything and just
13:47
never got that far with it you did now
13:50
that I look at it you must have gotten a
13:52
couple hundred uh members because I
13:54
didn't look at the text pages I was just
13:56
looking at yeah yeah those were the
13:58
Chiefs skates those were the true Slant
14:00
six
14:02
people back and looked there were some
14:04
Oddball things in there here and there
14:06
but uh I'd had to date to to remember
14:09
them
14:10
anyway oh I'm glad it's all back up I
14:13
hope that other people are inspired to
14:14
come and look at it now that it's there
14:17
yeah yeah uh you know it's basically a
14:20
museum piece now and you know thanks
14:22
again for stitching it all back together
14:24
and get the links working and I mean I
14:27
just handed you a hot and I don't know
14:30
how you managed to to pull it off but uh
14:33
yeah it's a functioning site again so
14:35
thank you oh you and Gary did that to me
14:40
twice and now that we know that you're a
14:42
sucker there'll probably be two three
14:44
more you know it just wasn't that
14:46
complicated a a project you know the old
14:49
tail finite it was
14:51
just early internet somebody trying to
14:54
make something happen out of their
14:56
basement and you know there's a little
14:58
bit of a story to tell there but it
15:00
really was reflective of the era you I
15:04
there was probably thousands of us doing
15:07
kind of the same thing with something
15:09
back then so it it's a nicely crafted
15:11
site loads very very quickly because
15:14
there is no excess stuff there's no
15:15
loading jQuery and running a thousand
15:18
javascripts right it just loads quickly
15:21
and you can read whatever you want if
15:23
you're in the mind to read
15:25
things and it's it's very it's a
15:28
pleasing simp old layout too it's really
15:30
nicer than I think anything I ever came
15:32
up with yeah um yeah that was from some
15:36
course I took at Virginia Tech uh that
15:39
showed you how to do a sidebar with a
15:40
toolbar in it so it's dirt simple
15:43
underneath and it was all done by hand
15:46
yeah the the logo came from some guy
15:49
that was a member of the
15:51
site he just emailed it to me one day
15:53
going I was playing around can you use
15:55
this I'm like yeah thanks
16:00
so uh you know that was a that was a
16:03
freebie thinking back on those days
16:07
um at least the folks I was dealing with
16:10
nobody was literally looking to uh to be
16:15
very ultra competitive or Cutthroat or
16:18
you know um I'm gonna you know climb the
16:21
ladder and step on everybody that I can
16:23
on the way up and get rich and whatever
16:25
uh it was let's share
16:29
and let's help each other out it was a
16:31
lot different than it is now before the
16:34
Zuckerberg of the world took
16:36
over yeah and it's a lot nicer to
16:39
participate in these sites with a lot
16:40
more trustworthy information that's not
16:43
done by AI
16:46
yeah I don't remember any trolls back
16:49
then no a lot we had some people got
16:52
over excited yeah including me and some
16:56
people who had to occasionally be
16:58
suspended including
17:00
me but not a whole lot of trolls it was
17:02
a good atmosphere yeah yeah it's a bit
17:06
different now sadly between Bots and
17:10
troll farms and whatever else there is
17:12
out there I mean people would like come
17:15
in with helpful suggestions and point me
17:17
in the right direction and contribute
17:19
things and you know it was fun it was a
17:23
lot of fun back then yeah it's been one
17:25
Adventure after another and hopefully
17:27
there's a few more to follow you know
17:29
we'll see
