With over half the car delivered by suppliers, how parts showed up really mattered! Engineer CudaPete on how Chrysler used new technology and careful packaging to help automate its plants and bring parts to the assembly line safely... #motales #factories #quality #boxes #shipping #chrysler #mopar

hello and welcome to another episode of
0:06
motels I'm Dave's minion Cuda Pete and
0:10
today will be third in our series of
0:12
what was involved with the manufacturing
0:14
and supply of car parts to Chrysler
0:17
Corporation in the mid1 1980s we
0:19
previously went over engineering and
0:21
supplier quality today we will look more
0:24
at Material Handling so we're at the
0:26
point where the parts are produced and
0:28
they're ready to go out the door
0:31
can the supplier just throw them in a
0:32
box and ship them to the plant no there
0:35
were specifications for that too and
0:37
they were called out in the packaging
0:40
and shipping instruction manual and this
0:43
manual provided specific instructions on
0:46
how parts were to be packed and shipped
0:49
to the assembly plant so they could be
0:50
installed on the cars in the most
0:52
efficient and E economic manner possible
0:55
so the first thing is when you were
0:57
shipping the parts you wanted to try in
0:59
minim miniz the chance of damage so the
1:02
trucks are would be loaded so that maybe
1:04
the heaviest parts are on the bottom and
1:06
the lightest parts are on the top
1:08
something something like loading your
1:10
grocery cart you want to keep the
1:11
heavier items on the bottom and the
1:13
lighter items like bread on the top you
1:15
don't want to get out and get home and
1:17
have your bread all smooshed it doesn't
1:18
work good that way the same with car
1:20
parts you want them to arrive at the
1:22
plant in good usable condition so the
1:25
second thing about standardized
1:27
packaging was at the time there was
1:29
beginning to use automatic guided
1:31
vehicles in the plants or AGS and these
1:34
AGS could only be programmed to accept
1:37
certain siiz boxes or cartons or
1:39
containers consistently so it was very
1:41
important that things were packed the
1:44
same time after time in the same type of
1:46
packaging so that the AGS could be used
1:49
to deliver them to the proper places on
1:51
the assembly line also from the economic
1:55
side reusable containers racks pallets
1:57
bins and boxes were encouraged so this
2:00
way they could be returned to the
2:02
supplier and reused another time instead
2:04
of being disposed of so the boxes may be
2:08
designed to be stackable or collapsable
2:11
or in some way easy to return to the
2:13
supplier so that they could be reused if
2:16
they were going to be a corrugated box
2:18
they were standards for that too so that
2:20
the box would not collapse or fall apart
2:22
when it was being unloaded or moved
2:24
around the plant so it was very
2:26
important that these standards be met
2:28
and that the trucks be loaded properly
2:31
so that the lot of economies and
2:33
efficiencies could be realized that way
2:35
because just in time delivery and Just
2:38
in Time Manufacturing were starting to
2:39
take hold in the industry at that point
2:42
and it was critical that Parts arrived
2:44
at the assembly time at the assembly
2:46
plant when they were needed to avoid
2:48
production
2:49
delays secondly when the parts got to
2:53
the plants it was important to be able
2:55
to identify them so chryler came up with
2:58
the shipping parts identification label
3:01
standards manual in this manual it
3:04
defined the size and placement of
3:06
shipping labels on these containers so
3:09
you always wanted the shipping label to
3:11
be in the same location you always
3:13
wanted it to be the same size and you
3:15
wanted all your shipping labels to
3:18
contain certain information such as the
3:20
part number the lot number it's actually
3:23
in the box so that anybody could go up
3:25
to that box and quickly identify what it
3:27
was where it was supposed to be
3:30
so that was important for efficiency
3:32
also and the other thing that was coming
3:34
into play at the time was barcode so
3:36
barcode standards had to be developed so
3:39
that once something got into the plant
3:41
it could be quickly identified using a
3:43
barcode and that that didn't hold up
3:45
things as well so at the time because of
3:48
just in time delivery Just in Time
3:50
Manufacturing it was very important that
3:53
things be packaged properly consistently
3:55
and identified properly and consistency
3:58
so to be as efficient and as economical

as possible if you enjoyed this video
