mob one of the things that we saw last
0:02
year at Carlyle which impressed everyone
0:04
was your Dodge Daytona with it's
0:07
absolutely perfect mint condition paint
0:09
job which he deprecated and said no this
0:11
isn't nearly perfect and then you showed
0:13
us some imperfections that nobody else
0:16
could see well when you when you're
0:18
painting a car for the first time after
0:20
30 years of their opinion car before it
0:22
does get to be rather a challenge
0:26
especially if you're painting milf lake
0:29
and I hadn't painted metal flake in such
0:31
a long time the first time I painted
0:35
metal flake was on a 62 Chrysler believe
0:38
it or not and it was it was it green I
0:40
hate they can suggest this but it was a
0:42
green emerald green metallic which was a
0:46
Ford color I'm sorry but that's what it
0:49
was and it was a lacquer paint and
0:52
basically had rolled it on and got a
0:54
perfect job but in this particular case
0:57
I wanted to use the original clear coat
1:01
over the base coat and the preparation
1:04
is the most important part basically I
1:08
took the car apart and there's pictures
1:11
of that in the gallery in the Daytona
1:14
gallery just look in the photo gallery
1:16
and then you see my my cars listed I
1:20
have to change the head of it but I will
1:22
but the preparation of the car is most
1:25
important and what I did is I took the
1:27
whole car apart and before I took it
1:30
apart I circled and photographed all the
1:32
imperfections that I thought that I was
1:34
able to fix so that as we were standing
1:36
away we would have a graphic record of
1:39
where the imperfections were if we
1:41
couldn't see them making it a whole lot
1:42
easier so then we pounded out some of
1:46
them and glazed over some of them with
1:50
body putty some bondo but a whole gallon
1:55
of bondo and use maybe like a golf ball
1:57
size because it was really that that
1:59
minimal and then the the red mud of the
2:02
red lead putty and built it up and built
2:06
it up until the body was as straight as
2:07
we could possibly make it
2:09
time that we had then came the primer
2:13
the primer is a filler primer and what
2:16
the primer basically does is it goes
2:18
ahead and fills in the imperfections
2:19
that you missed the first time but just
2:22
sand it down prime it again send it down
2:25
primary together basically we're
2:26
blocking it and the most important part
2:29
of the whole thing is to keep it clean
2:30
and I was extremely fortunate there's a
2:33
girl in of all places British Columbia
2:38
up in that up in that area of Canada I
2:41
was introduced to her by biz whose
2:44
frequency forms occasionally and he
2:47
introduced me to her and she and I
2:49
communicated I've got documents that she
2:51
emailed me of how to do these various
2:53
things she said grab a bucket put a cup
2:57
full of soap in it fill it up with nice
3:01
warm water soak your paper and then use
3:06
it to block out the car but keep a spray
3:09
bottle of the same mixture so that you
3:12
can keep it wet the whole time and this
3:13
is how we do it when you don't have a
3:16
whole lot of room you know you don't
3:19
have a whole lot of the resource so we
3:20
blocked it all out it looked okay and
3:22
then of course then the paint went on
3:25
but the imperfections you were talking
3:27
about when you're when you're painting
3:31
and you don't use the right reducer
3:34
actually the reducer was okay it was the
3:36
I think it was introduced or basically
3:39
there's a FASTA medium and a slow
3:41
reducer and when you when you use these
3:44
the fast of course is going to have the
3:46
paint flash really fast and depending on
3:50
the temperature that might be what you
3:52
want especially if it's in a cold
3:54
temperature or if it's a warm
3:57
temperature you might want it to flash a
3:58
little bit slower to give the paint the
4:00
opportunity to flow properly well paint
4:03
like the other thing has green
4:04
especially if you're dealing with
4:06
metallic paint so I've paint it in one
4:09
direction and I thought you know what
4:10
I've got some paint left over in the can
4:12
and this is the front of the hood I'm
4:14
the pool that more paint on here and I
4:15
wouldn't the opposite
4:16
direction bad move so if you look at it
4:20
in the light you can see that the
4:22
reducer that I used didn't allow the
4:24
metal flake to lay down to match the
4:28
direction that I took in the other
4:29
direction but you only see it in the
4:31
annoy there's a couple of other areas
4:33
but we won't talk about those now how
4:36
did you keep large dust particles cat
4:39
hair as human hairs leaves well I
4:44
actually painted the thing of paint
4:45
booth and another funny story and it
4:50
feel kind of bad about it because I
4:51
really intended to visit with this club
4:54
more often but the Panhandle ponies once
4:57
again for it gets involved Panhandle
5:00
ponies was being led by or the president
5:05
of panhandle ponies was a member of a
5:07
Chrysler Club the local Chrysler club
5:09
and they suggested that I contact one of
5:11
the ladies there who owns a paint booth
5:14
because she does Mustang restores so she
5:18
graciously allowed me to bring the car
5:21
in sweet o the car there put it in her
5:23
paint booth and we did all the work in
5:25
the paint booth so there are some bugs
5:28
that got in and when you find one you
5:30
just flick it off and if it's in the
5:32
wrong process you end up with very small
5:36
particles of wing embedded in your paint
5:38
but that gives a character not
5:41
necessarily going to win any major shows
5:43
with it but it looks better than it did
5:45
when it came from the factory I think so
5:50
do thanks not-not-not the bug but the
5:55
overall results yes well of course I
5:57
have 1974 valiant so it came from the
5:59
factory with bulges in the paint
6:01
misaligned trim and misalignment yeah I
6:04
ran into that problem the Daytona is
6:07
notorious for having the doors too far
6:09
forward and I've even had people ask me
6:14
why did your doors not interfere with
6:18
the front
6:18
well for years they did and the reason
6:21
that my the front of my door didn't rust
6:24
was because it constantly rubbing the
6:26
rust off of the bare metal as it reached
6:28
that one particular spot but what i did
6:31
was i removed the doors after so many
6:34
years the cars hinge pins needed to be
6:37
replaced so i replaced the hinge pins
6:40
but in the process I pulled the doors
6:42
back nearly an eighth of an inch so that
6:46
the line of the front and the line in
6:48
the back of the space between the doors
6:51
and the fenders and the rear was the
6:53
same I did the same thing with the rear
6:55
deck and that was a challenge and I did
6:57
the same thing with the with the hood
6:59
and now they're all lined up another
7:02
challenge was getting the round door for
7:05
the gas cap perfectly round and in place
7:09
as well that was a challenge took a
7:11
couple of washers and moving things
7:12
around a little bit to build it out and
7:14
move it over but it it got wind up
7:17
finally it's been about a day on that of
7:19
course one thing that I should tell
7:20
people I should ask you to tell people
7:23
is that your Daytona is not one of the
7:26
very last ones to leave the factory
7:28
floor no so all this paint work and all
7:31
these adjustments came this is now the
7:33
year 2007 what years early told my
7:36
Daytona is an 86 I bought it in december
7:40
of 85 so I'm the only owner of the car
7:42
and it has seen some action my
7:46
daughter's drove it she was there was a
7:50
time where she was accused of ramming
7:53
into the back of another car with it but
7:55
trust me it didn't happen the other car
7:57
backed into her that was another story
7:59
we don't have time to go into that but
8:01
there's there was that incident and I
8:04
drove it to Connecticut one time and the
8:06
door was bashed in the only accident
8:09
that it's ever had you know you have
8:11
these things that you can't avoid and I
8:14
was stupid one day and back into the
8:17
Mustang and did a little digging on the
8:20
on the rear which was taken care of but
8:23
beyond that the car is solid we had a
8:27
couple of rust areas that we had to deal
8:28
with we dealt with those and when we
8:30
have the entire interior out of the car
8:32
because if you got to paint the car you
8:33
have to paint everything taking a car to
8:36
a place and having them slap some paint
8:39
on it that makes it look good for a
8:40
little while but they have to tape
8:42
around everything in my case I removed
8:46
all the trim I remove the wings the
8:50
doors and everything get everything
8:52
lined up but I remove the entire
8:54
interior except for the dash and the the
8:58
steering column that we take around but
9:01
the entire interior got removed we found
9:04
a couple of rust areas there I had an
9:07
issue where my quarter windows on the
9:09
side those were also removed because I
9:12
had some issues where water had gotten
9:15
in and it eventually arrested the some
9:19
holes in the spare tire so well so if we
9:23
repaired that and I found out where the
9:25
what it was coming in because I got in
9:27
the car with the interior removed I had
9:29
some of the outside spray water on a
9:31
water hose I said ah there it SAT so it
9:34
we removed those we didn't break them
9:37
which is kind of remarkable they're held
9:38
in with five screws and butyl tape and
9:41
it's touted to be one of the most
9:44
difficult windows to remove but we took
9:47
them out of it didn't break them and me
9:49
when I pulled the trim the rubber trim
9:52
off of the back glass I did that because
9:55
I didn't want to to have no paint
10:00
underneath right you know and I didn't
10:02
wasn't going to tape it off so I just
10:03
removed it once the car was finished I
10:06
had the paint that I paint the last guy
10:10
come out and I had him pull the rear he
10:14
wasn't happy hold the rear glass reframe
10:17
it clean it off reseal it and I said
10:20
okay now how much you gonna charge me to
10:22
put these two pieces back in well
10:24
basically it was another bottle or a
10:26
tube of that butyl that liquid urethane
10:29
he says I put this on there those things
10:31
I've never come
10:32
that's fine so he put it on slant it in
10:35
place I put the screws in tighten down
10:37
he went to the other side will tell you
10:38
what i have not had any more water so
10:41
those side glasses were leaking and you
10:45
know we painted underneath and clean
10:46
them all up really well about the one
10:50
common place where even new cars tend to
10:52
get rust is the bottom of the door seen
10:54
the bottom of the door seemed on the
10:56
door itself and the door itself there's
10:58
there is some issues with that and in
11:01
the back after I painted it this was the
11:03
paint job is now about three years old I
11:05
noticed that as you know how the door
11:08
skin comes around then it comes up and
11:11
then is welded to the end right sides
11:12
that's the course is talking about yes
11:14
there's supposed to be a scene seal
11:16
across that what happens is the same
11:18
seal itself gets so brittle in flakes
11:21
off and then of course the water comes
11:24
in from the outside if you don't have
11:25
those wipers now those wipers are no
11:28
longer available untold for my car so
11:32
you have to come up with another way to
11:33
get those rubber wipers on the outside
11:35
basically what they do is they keep the
11:37
glass clean at the same time to keep
11:39
water out well the majority of the water
11:41
out anyways right those are the things
11:43
that are felt like material it felt on
11:46
the inside rubber on the outside so
11:47
we're talking about the side windows now
11:49
and not the windshield when you say not
11:52
my difference thing not the window when
11:53
you roll the windows down these are the
11:55
wipers that are on the outside well if
11:58
those are deteriorated to the point
11:59
where mine were deteriorated then water
12:01
is easily able to get in if it gets in
12:04
its going to pull it's going to pool and
12:06
of course that rust happens so the door
12:09
that I had before I had the accident
12:11
actually had some issues and I was going
12:13
to have to deal with that well then the
12:15
accident with the little crush crush on
12:17
the the door oh well how to replace the
12:19
door found a door in bluefield west
12:22
virginia guy there has lots of Daytona's
12:25
in the yard found a nice door found a
12:27
good price on it looked at it it was
12:29
flawless well it was red my car is blue
12:34
so there's that flaw but I should care
12:36
of that and in the meantime basically to
12:40
solve that problem where the water comes
12:43
and you have the rust it seeps down
12:46
through the space between the frame and
12:50
where it's welded up the water seeps
12:53
down in there in the course it's just
12:55
moisture so it causes for us to occur so
12:57
what you have to do is you have to stop
12:59
the rust from occurring there's a
13:01
product that is available from lots of
13:04
places but the one that is touted to be
13:06
the best is from Eastwood and it's they
13:10
call their rust encapsulator they have a
13:12
rust converter they have a bunch of
13:13
other things but the rust encapsulator
13:14
basically what is going to happen on my
13:18
next project and to repair my rear deck
13:22
is I'm going to get inside and I'm going
13:25
to lay down a layer of rust encapsulator
13:28
to basically seal the steel now the
13:32
steel is going to be sealed any rust
13:34
that maybe there will no longer be
13:37
forming new rust unless there's water
13:39
and oxygen getting to the rest well rust
13:42
encapsulator is going to encapsulate
13:44
that to the extent that no more water
13:46
can get there and on the underneath side
13:49
where the metal is welded bent up and
13:51
welded in I'm going to remove the same
13:54
sealer clean it all out put in the rust
13:57
encapsulator put a new layer of sand
13:59
ceiling so in effect those areas if you
14:03
can catch it before it gets like bubbly
14:04
rust and now you have to do some serious
14:06
work to it if you can catch it so that
14:09
you notice that it's a little red and
14:11
it's a you'll notice that there's rust
14:14
there simply encapsulate the rust put
14:17
the new seam sealer on to prevent water
14:19
from getting into that area and you'll
14:21
do a long you'll go a long way towards
14:25
keeping it from becoming a whole you
14:29
know you'll be able to store or let's go
14:31
save your doors from having to be
14:33
replaced or having to be welded or
14:35
anything yeah on the new car the the
14:40
black with a new project I bought it
14:44
sight unseen more or less I mean I
14:47
actually gave her the money when I saw
14:50
the car but this is another 86 this
14:53
one's a turbo z this was going to get
14:55
the same treatment can cheer
14:56
coming out everything's would be
14:57
inspected but I've got two areas in that
14:59
car that are going to need some work
15:01
apparently the seam sealer at the cow
15:04
where the firewall and the and the dash
15:07
sort of come together up in that area
15:08
the seam sealer is just flicked off to
15:11
the point where water has gotten in
15:12
there to the extent there is actually
15:14
some really really thin metal I'm gonna
15:17
have to cut that out and well the piece
15:18
in it's just no other way to do it I
15:20
also noticed that in the entire car when
15:23
I inspected it prior to buying it there
15:25
was a spot about the size of maybe two
15:28
half dollars that is a hole in the
15:32
rocker panel of course that's going to
15:34
have to be cut out of oil it as well if
15:36
you got hole you're going to have to
15:37
weld it that's just the way it's going
15:40
to be but after it's welded I'm going to
15:42
coat it with the undercoating and the
15:44
Russian caps later to prevent it from
15:46
from rusting again in the future let's
15:50
go up another question thank you very
15:53
much Bob Wells nai preciated your have
15:56
no problem
