Stellantis dropping hydrogen power
Years after saying that hydrogen-powered heavy duty Rams were being developed, Stellantis has announced the end of its hydrogen programs. The company blamed lack of fuel stations and demand.
Hydrogen-powered large and midsized commercial vans, which were to be made this summer in France and Poland, have been dropped. The company is speaking with shareholders in its hydrogen partner, Symbio, “in line with their respective obligations.”
Cummins has been working on replacing everything above the block on three of its diesel engines to make them run on new fuels, including hydrogen and natural gas. As part of that, Cummins was working with Love’s on making hydrogen and natural gas or propane easy to get at truck stops. Development seems to have taken much longer than expected, and there has been no hint from inside Ram of any actual hydrogen-powered trucks.
Peugeot, before becoming part of Stellantis, had created a setup where a vehicle could be made in either battery-electric or hydrogen fuel-cell form.
