Updated: 300,000-Dart re-recall and many Ford callbacks

All modern automatic Dodge Darts are being recalled, including those which were previously recalled for the same problem, because the shifter cable can fail. When that happens, the car may end up in Neutral instead of Park, and can then roll away and crash.

Owners should make sure the parking brake works, then use it when stopped; but so far there do not appear to have been any crashes due to this problem. The company added that while there were no related injuries or collisions, customers should apply the parking brake and shut off the engine before leaving the car.

The Dart recall affects all automatic-transmission New Dodge Darts made from February 24, 2012, through October 4, 2016—but only around 2% actually have the defect. Manual transmission cars are not affected, but a Stellantis spokesman wrote that both the automatics, dual dry clutch and conventional, are affected.

The last recall for this problem was on April 4, 2019. The NHTSA told Stellantis that they were seeing failures in November 2024 and asked for a response. FCA US, Stellantis’ US division, responded in January 2025. In April, the NHTSA asked for a meeting; and in June, FCA US did a more complete review and found shifter cable bushing failures after the prior recall. They saw 560 warranty claims from this issue but no crashes.

A remedy is being developed, but is likely, in Motales’ view, to involve inspection of the cable around the bushing, and replacement of any defective bushings. Stellantis noted that this global recall includes 298,439 Darts in the United States, 20,117 in Canada, 3,389 in Mexico, and 874 everywhere else (all figures are estimates).
